The Association

The Women’s Legal & Community Center is a space run by Yaşamak Sosyal Alan ve Dayanışma Derneği. It aims at supporting marginalized individuals and communities (particularly refugee and migrant women) to start a new life in Izmir and to foster solidarity among Turkish society and migrant communities.

The center offers coordinated legal, psychological, and social support to overcome barriers to social and economic mobility and to facilitate daily life.

Additional to the above-mentioned services, the following programs aimed at fostering integration and the clients’/participants’ autonomy: various workshops and activities including social activities, practical workshops, and gender equality sessions, assistance for finding jobs, interactive anti-discrimination sessions (theater, art and music-based) and a holistic peace-building program.

Above all that, the center is available to participants as a free, open, and participatory space, as well as a place of meeting, exchange, mutual learning, and common activities where everyone has a feeling of belonging, security, and trust. In this frame, language-speaking and experience-exchange groups take place.

The center includes a separate area for child-care to enable women with children to participate in the center’s program.

 

Job Description

The Translator is responsible for the Arabic-French speaking community’s communication needs.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Translate during the projects’ activities and individual counseling sessions
  • Act as the key-connecting person within the center-community and help to build and strengthen connections among the different communities
  • Be present in daily life in the center and translate during sessions, trainings, discussion rounds, and meetings
  • Facilitate daily communication within the community
  • Assist the lawyer, social worker, and psychologist during sessions with translation
  • Accompany clients to institutions and appointments for assisting with translations
  • Translate documents and help with administrative tasks
  • Responsibility for various documentation processes
  • Attend and organize meetings of the center-community
  • Assist social worker with case-work
  • Ensure adherence to internationally recognized protection principles, standards, and relevant international and local regulations.
  • Attend regular coordination meetings of the whole team
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the center coordinator

 

Qualifications Required

 

  • Bachelor degree in Translation department or relevant educational field or related working experience
  • Minimum 2 years professional experience in the protection sector, preferably in a non-profit organization
  • Experience working with women and with vulnerable groups; preferably experienced with issues of life in exile.
  • Experience of cross-cultural work
  • High resilience and ability to be flexible and to adapt to  unexpected situations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good knowledge of the cultures where Arabic and French are spoken (particularly Syria and various African countries)
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills; detail-oriented
  • Commitment to humanitarian principles and values
  • Commitment to equal opportunity and gender practice
  • Good team player, flexible and capable of working with a multicultural team, and culturally sensitive

Yasamak Dernegi is a non-profit, non-governmental grassroot-organisation founded by a group of individuals, who have been active in different projects for many years. The association carries out educational work circling around life in exile in its wider context of a past-colonial, globalized world as well as the Women's Legal & Community Center which aims to support female refugees and migrants and their families residing in Izmir to overcome every-day burdens and to increase their social mobility and autonomy.
