General Functions:  

The conflict and violence in Syria has continued to create surges of people crossing the borders from Syria into neighbouring countries. The number of Syrians registered or awaiting registration in host countries has surpassed 5 million and 6.2 million have been displaced inside Syria. Host governments and humanitarian actors, including IOM, are providing relief assistance and protection to this extremely vulnerable population living with host families and in increasingly crowded camps and settlements.

As a member of the UN Humanitarian Country Team in Syria and all concerned neighbouring countries (Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey), the IOM Director General has activated the L3 Emergency SOPs to enhance organizational humanitarian assistance and priorities related to IDPs, refugees and returnees, and is actively participating in the emergency response within this rapidly changing humanitarian context.

 

IOM's strategy for Turkey as indicated in the 3RP (Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan) is three-pronged; firstly, i) provision of humanitarian assistance focusing on the distribution of food, non-food items, cash vouchers, winterization, shelter rehabilitation, and provision of transportation, ii) to ease the burden on national and local structures through the establishment of multi-service community centres offering services and protection, community stabilization through improvements in public infrastructure and increase access to education and iii) supporting the resilience of refugees and host communities through livelihoods, community stabilisation and income generating activities.

 

Under the overall supervision of the Public Information Officer, administrative supervision of the Head of Sub Office in Hatay and direct technical supervision of the Communications Officer based in Gaziantep and in close coordination with the PI team in Gaziantep, the incumbent will be responsible for providing support to a wide range of IOM Turkey programs and departments in order to meet increasing demands for high quality print and digital information materials. The incumbent will work across diverse projects supporting teams during project implementation to enhance visibility and documentation efforts that contribute to IOM Turkey’s overall communications efforts and brand.

 

 

 

 

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Communicate with the project teams, follow up and obtain media materials such as photos, videos and stories of news interest. Write and produce human interest stories.
  2. Archive the media materials collected from project teams.
  3. Take photos and videos i.e. during project, field visits and events.
  4. Monitor local media and build relations with local media outlets and provincial and district-level government press departments.
  5. Assist with translating social media posts from/to English/Turkish and Arabic.
  6. Implement IOM’s branding policy: verify all reports, info sheets, banners, and other products are produced in line with IOM guidelines for the projects implemented in Turkey.
  7. Implement donor visibility guidelines.
  8. Conduct interviews with beneficiaries and other stakeholders.
  9. Draft articles in Turkish, English and Arabic.
  10. Coordinate with PI team to organize and maintain all written and digital content in a central file-sharing system. Create and regularly update the PI Library.
  11. Extrapolate monthly and quarterly data from tracking system for social media reporting, along with other ad-hoc social media data requests, including donor reports (Advanced understanding of social media platforms Twitter and Facebook).
  12. Organize public information (PI) library
  13. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Education:

 

  • Completed / On going university degree in public relations, media & communications
  • Strong speaking and writing skills in English, Turkish and Arabic are highly desirable. Proficiency in at least two of these languages is a must.

 

 

Experience:

 

  • Knowledge in media and communications;
  • Proven and excellent overall writing skills;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Prezi)
  • Proven experience in Photography;
  • Strong understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms;
  • Proven strong organizational skills and practical experience of how-to multi-task, prioritize and work independently;
  • Good understanding of social media;
  • Working experience in development or humanitarian environment is desirable.

Languages:

 

  • Fluency in English and Turkish is required.  
  • Knowledge of Arabic is advantageous.
