Concern Worldwide is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organization dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries. Concern has been working in Turkey since August 2013 and currently looking for a potential candidate for the Training and Language Support Assistant – Turkish/English position.

JOB PURPOSE:

Concern is looking for a Training and Language Support Assistant who speaks Turkish to mother-tongue level with fluency in or an excellent standard of English. Varying levels of experience in translation, proofreading and/or editing are welcomed due to the variety of translation requirements encompassed by the role. It is envisaged that the Training and Language Support Assistant will also provide in-house tuition in both Turkish and English to Concern staff to aid in the process of capacity building. Supporting organization staff in a range of programme and administrative duties will also constitute an integral part of the role.

The successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual with strong communication and organisational skills, will demonstrate enthusiasm and have the ability to work on tasks independently or as part of a team. Excellent attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and prioritise work under pressure are also key attributes for the position. Translations can cover a diverse range of subjects within the INGO/humanitarian sector so an interest or previous experience in this field would be of benefit. The jobholder may be required to coordinate with other stakeholders including local authorities, beneficiaries and other NGOs in support of Concern staff.

This is a national post and candidates should have the right to work in Turkey at the time of application.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Translation of a range of reports and other documents as appropriate – e.g. in-house reports, contracts, manuals etc.
  • Identifying spelling, grammar, punctuation and other language errors (proofreading and editing) in documentation for both internal and external consumption
  • Be involved in the building of staff capacity in relation to both Turkish and English language skills via the provision of in-house tuition and language classes
  • Coordinate with other stakeholders including local authorities, beneficiaries and other NGOs in support of and in conjunction with Concern staff.
  • Evaluate and prioritise internal translation requests and deliver translated content in a precise manner
  • Support team in a range of programme and administrative duties
  • Support inter-staff communication in relation to programme concepts and day-to-day office matters
  • Provision of translation support as appropriate to staff conducting interviews
  • To adhere to the standards of conduct outlined in the Programme Participant Protection Policy and Concern Code of Conduct.

PERSON SPECIFICATION/ ESSENTIAL

Education, Qualifications & Experience Required:

You need to show evidence of the following:

  • Fluency in both Turkish and English; Impeccable communication skills;
  • A good understanding and in-depth knowledge of language/country-specific cultures;
  • Ability to translate and proofread/edit general and technically-oriented conversations and/or documents/presentations as appropriate. Understanding of the source texts and ability to render them faithfully and accurately into English or Turkish, conveying the original context & meaning, taking into account the register, grammar, syntax, idiom and literacy techniques;
  • serve as translator in interview contexts;
  • excellent attention to detail combined with the ability to work quickly to meet deadlines;
  • Language tuition/teaching qualification desirable, but not essential
  • Proficiency in the use of Word and Excel – knowledge of translation-oriented applications and software is helpful, though not essential;
  • Self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new knowledge;
  • University degree; ideally candidate should have studied translation at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, but this is not essential.

Work experience

Previous experience in the provision of translation/tuition services is highly desirable; work experience in a technical, legal or administrative capacity or setting is helpful.
