ABOUT AFS:

AFS is a worldwide network of AFS partner organizations that work together to advance global education and foster meaningful connections across cultures. As the network’s largest partner, AFS-USA works to increase global competency by providing a variety of international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities. These include: immersion-based study abroad experiences in over 40 countries worldwide; opportunities to host foreign AFS exchange students; and global learning workshops and curricula for educator, schools and businesses.

 

OVERVIEW:

AFS-USA manages a number of U.S. government sponsored programs which provide scholarships for adolescents to participate in international exchange programs. The Sponsored Programs department focuses on maintaining relationships among a number of stakeholders including high schools, teachers, families, volunteers, alumni and collaborating organizations.   

 

Primary duties include carrying out hosting program coordination, planning and implementing hosting students activities, orientations, administrative follow up with AFS – USA New York office, hosting schools and  hosting  families in Turkey, communicating with domestic and international organizational partners, coordination and collaboration with US Embassy stakeholders, and monitoring/reporting participant adjustment and compliance issues while on program. The Program Coordinator is also tasked with implementing program-focused projects and making recommendations to streamline program processes.  The Program Coordinator will work closely with staff in the Sponsored Programs Department of AFS USA in the US and in Turkey.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES (Key functions):

  • Conduct recruitment activities in collaboration and coordination with schools.
  • Maintain data integrity for applicant files.
  • Coordinate with schools and host families in Turkey
  • Coordinate logistics and deliver content for virtual and in-person events both in preparation stages and on-site logistics for multiple orientation events. 
  • Prepare program and process documents to meet program requirements and determine department/staff involvement and resources needed.
  • Maintain program website and related social media platforms.
  • Coordinate both internal and external communications regarding the program.
  • Ensure smooth running of the office and escalate issues to first with AFS-USA.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Internet research, website navigation, database utilization and general IT skills for working on annual application background development, publishing website stories
  • Experience working in a volunteer-based organization (not a mandatory)
  • Ability to work independently and with multiple deadlines as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize projects, meet deadlines and work efficiently
  • Demonstrated initiative and critical thinking
  • Willingness to perform duties and make contributions outside of the formal job requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Academic background in Education, International Education, International Relations, Business Communications or a related field
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, and service-oriented work style
  • English and Turkish language fluency
  • Flexible working hours
  • Flexible on travelling
  • At least 5+ years of experience in the field of international youth programs
  • At least 3-5 years of project management experience

 

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • The Program Coordinator works in AFS-USA Inc, Turkey Istanbul Liaison office. 
  • Office hours are 9:30-5:30. 
  • Ability to work on evenings and weekends during peak periods and critical events
  • Requires extensive domestic travel and occasional international travel
