General Functions:

The Syria crisis is entering its twelfth year and millions of Syrians continue to seek refuge in neighbouring countries including Turkey. It is estimated that over 12.2 million individuals inside Syria now require humanitarian assistance and 7.6 million are internally displaced (SRP 2015-2016). Over 4 million Syrians have fled as refugees (UNHCR).

As of 01 November 2022, Turkey is hosting over 3,5 million Syrian refugees. Over 47,000 reside in 7 camps (over 1,3% of the total Syrian refugees) across Southeast Turkey and the remaining live outside of camps (around 98%). Of the 3.5 million living outside of camps, the majority are spread across Turkey, with the majority residing in the border provinces, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Hatay as well as Istanbul, Mersin, and Adana.

In October 2014, the Government of Turkey adapted the Temporary Protection (TP) Regulation that extends protection and assistance to all Syrians in Turkey and provides refugees with rights and duties and the framework to access health care, education, and social assistance.

Under the overall supervision of the Programme Support Officer and direct supervision of the Senior Disability Inclusion Assistant, the incumbent will be responsible for providing Arabic sign language interpretation service during events, activities, workshops organized by IOM. Moreover, the Sign language Interpreter will be supporting IOM’s Public Information unit in adding sign language interpretation to videos and other relevant media content where relevant.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide sign language interpretation and facilitate the discussion with Deaf participants during training courses and awareness sessions.
  2. Provide sign language interpretation during meetings and events organized by IOM.
  3. Facilitate discussion with Deaf-led Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs).
  4. Support IOM teams in delivering messages and awareness in sign language.
  5. Support IOM PI unit in producing videos and other media content in Turkish sign language.
  6. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

 

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Arabic sign language interpretation certificate from an accredited academic institution.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in doing simultaneous Arabic sign language interpretation.
  • Experience in working with the Deaf community.

Languages:

  • Fluency in Arabic is required.
  • Working knowledge of Turkish and English is advantageous.
