Position: Photo Journalist Consultant
Location: Turkey (Istanbul, Izmir, and Reyhanli)
Duration: 8 weeks
Reports to: Deputy Country Director


Scope of Work:
Relief International is a leading nonprofit organization working in roughly 17 countries to relieve poverty, ensure well-being and advance dignity. We specialize in fragile settings, responding to natural disasters, humanitarian crises and chronic poverty. Relief International combines humanitarian and development approaches to provide immediate services while laying the groundwork for long-term impact. Our signature approach — which we call the RI Way—emphasizes local participation, an integration of services, strategic partnerships and a focus on civic skills. In this way, we empower communities to find, design and implement the solutions that work best for them.
Scope of Work:
The Photojournalist will be responsible for training select groups of refugee youth and children who are benefiting from programs run by RI and its implementing partners through intensive photography and writing workshop. Separate workshops will take place in İstanbul (2), İzmir, and Reyhanlı (Hatay). Each workshop will take five days with approximately 15 participants each, and will combine theoretical courses and practical courses of photo shooting, and a biographical story writing component to couple with the photographs. Resulting photographs taken by refugee children and youth will be displayed at photograph exhibitions organized in each city in collaboration with RI and RI’s partners.
After each of the workshops, the consultant will have a two-day period to select, edit, and print photographs for a public photo exhibition, and coordinate with the exhibition organization team. The consultant will attend the opening of each exhibition as well.
The photojournalist will visit RI’s program sites in Istanbul, İzmir, and Reyhanlı and produce the following deliverables:
1. Run a photo and writing workshop for refugees at RI’s partner sites
2. Each workshop will be conducted over a five-day period and the course will consist of daily photography assignments with the photojournalist to foster open and creative expression
3. Develop a photo archive of high resolution images taken by the beneficiaries
4. Select and edit the best photos to be presented in the photo exhibition and used by RI and its partners in awareness raising activities/open days
5. Create photo diaries for each beneficiary to keep with them after the completion of the course
6. Distribute certificates of completion for beneficiaries
7. Draft and finalize a 3-minute video on the photo course, interviewing beneficiaries and facilitators in coordination with RI

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant is expected to follow the requirements listed below:
 Agree upon a detailed timeline for the courses and exhibitions in coordination with RI and its partners. The two Istanbul-based trainings and one joint exhibition will be completed no later than December 10, 2019.
 Incorporate RI and donor branding and style guidelines as specified.
 Obtain consent from individuals featured in the photographs using RI’s consent form.
 Provide cameras and other necessary materials for the beneficiaries attending the course to use to produce the exhibit.
 Produce brief captions for all photos specifying the subject of the picture and an explanatory sheet with background information.
 Hire translators for the photo course, if needed (participants are Arabic-speaking).
 Provide RI with final material in editable soft copy format.
 Coordinate with exhibition organization efforts and provide hard copies of the exhibition photos in a timely manner.
Qualifications and Requirements:
 Photo journalist with a relevant degree and/or demonstrated experience.
 Demonstrated experience in photography and videography with an extensive portfolio.
 Experience in training on photography.
 Excellent communication skills
 An interest in humanitarian, development, and related issues.
 Proficiency in English required; knowledge of Arabic highly desirable.
Intellectual Property:
All information pertaining to this project (documentary, digital, cyber, project documents, etc.) belonging to RI, which the consultant may come into contact with in the performance of his/her duties under this assignment shall remain the property of RI who will have exclusive rights over their use. Except for the purposes of this assignment, the information shall not be disclosed to the public nor used in any way without written permission of RI. The copyright for all photographs, videos, and other materials produced as part of this assignment will remain with RI.
Project Proposal (narrative, financial) & Payment Arrangements:
The photo journalist will submit a short project proposal which will describe the approach and activities; and a financial proposal which includes all costs required for the performance of this assignment, such as the consultant’s fee, taxes, stationary for the participators, cameras for use during the workshops, certificates, lodging for facilitator, lunch and snacks for the participators for the duration of the training, international and domestic travel cost, transportation and accommodation cost. The contract price will be fixed output-based price, regardless of extension of the specified duration. Payment will be made in two parts upon submission of invoices and RI’s acceptance of deliverables; the first upon completion of the Istanbul-based activities, and the second upon completion of the remaining deliverables.
