Purpose of the Job:

Greenpeace Mediterranean operates a program structure in which a project development officer works in a team together with colleagues from other departments (operations, communication, social media, editorial, sales & marketing and editorial) to design and deliver issue specific projects to achieve specific agreed objectives. The project development officers role within the program team is to provide specialized issue knowledge or expertise as well as provide skills to develop and drive strategies for change. Tasks may also include leading the projects/teams as required, public representation and liaising with Greenpeace global network.

Project development officers report to the Program Director and work with a campaign team.

We are looking for a project development officers who has knowledge and experience on environment and ecology issues in general and who has expertise in these areas to carry out work in line with the campaign objectives. Knowledge and experience of at least one of the subjects of biodiversity, food, plastic waste and pollution and having a high motivation to work in these fields will be priority for this position. 

This position is temporarily available for a period of 9 months.


Main Responsibilities:

Strategy Development

●      Provide expertise and input, on the development of project strategies, global projects, and marketing proposals where relevant.

●      Follow the external debate and trends in order to identify issue engagement opportunities

●      Ensure the project strategies have realistic whilst ambitious objectives.

●      Lead project planning, including defining objectives, strategy, key messages, tactics,resources and monitoring & evaluation plan.

●      Adjust project plans according to internal needs and external trends in a timely and decisive manner.

●      Champion integrated, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural approach to project  management and decision making.

●      Ensuring the timely response to the developments crossing with the respective program

Project leading

●      Functioning as a project leader for a specific project which can be highly variable in scale and time, including managing a diverse team to achieve the objectives of the project, coordinating its outputs, managing its budget, reporting, monitoring and evaluating the results

Management of Project Support staff

●      Work closely with Data Insights in order to ensure data informed decisions

●      Work closely with Head of Digital Engagement in order to ensure digital activities are in line with project goals and audience centered

●      Work closely with Volunteer Coordinator to ensure volunteer engagement in projects from planning to evaluation



Research Coordination

●     Identify and organize background investigations/research and science needs. Provide clear direction for such investigations/research and science, and subsequently identify realistic focal points/targets for the issue and project strategy.

Marketing and profile events

●     Proactively contribute to the development and implementation of innovative strategies for marking events, in accordance with Greenpeace standards and principles, in order to maximize impact on the media/public/target in achieving agreed project objectives.

External Networking

●     Develop and maintain relationships with external parties such as key allies, academics, media, activists, industry, political fora, and other NGOs, in support of the project's objectives, to ensure maximum interaction and influence with external parties to support achievement of agreed project objectives.

Greenpeace Representation

●     Represent Greenpeace at relevant national, international and local meetings / conventions/press conferences with external bodies such as media, industry, governments, NGOs, and major donors/foundations, in order to further the agreed project objectives. 


Support to Sales and Marketing and Editorial

●      Advise and assist the Programme Director on the development of sales and marketing proposals, and subsequent project reporting and representation.

●      In conjunction with the project development manager provide briefs to sales and marketing managers, liaise with advertising agencies and other potential opportunities to

●      Support of Greenpeace work as required in order to ensure information used for sales, marketing and advertising proposals are factually correct and in line with the agreed strategy.



●     Write and/or oversee external and internal reports, fact sheets and briefings, ensuring clear and consistent messaging, in support of project objectives and in line with organisation publication policy in order to maximize coverage of the issue.

Communication and offline and online marketing

●     Proactively contribute to the development and implementation of innovative strategies for communication tools and offline and online marketing in cooperation with other departments, in order to maximize sales and impact on the media/public/target in achieving agreed project objectives.


Skills and Qualifications:

●      At least 3 years of working experience in the fields such as public interest organization, civil society campaigns or a similar works

●      University degree

●      Understanding of the roles that science, politics, economics, industry and media play in the society, their strategic implications for issue based projects

●      Understanding of, and ability to develop issue and project strategies

●      Good working knowledge of one or more issue areas

●      Research skills and/or experience

●      Budget management skills and/or experience

●      Lobbying skills and/or experience

●      Project management skills and/or experience including proven ability to effectively adjust plans to rapidly changing circumstances.

●      Ability to operate and lead under pressure and in physically or mentally challenging situations.

●      Presentation and public speaking skills and/or experience

●      Demonstrable commitment to environmental/peace issues

●      Fluency in written and spoken English
