Period of Assignment: 1 year with the possibility of extension

 

Location: Gaziantep

 

The project “Enhancing Women's Leadership for Sustainable Peace in Fragile Contexts in the MENA Region” (“Women4Peace”) is aiming at an improved participation of women in peace and political decision-making processes in the four focus countries Iraq, Yemen, Libya and Syria and beyond in the MENA region as well as at the global level. The objective is to create opportunities for women and feminist organisations and networks to participate and to improve their capacities in order to participate effectively in the relevant political decision-making processes. The project foresees a networking and exchange component across the different focus countries taking into account the specific transformation potentials and dynamics. A particular focus of the project is on strengthening civil society organisations, especially women's rights organisations that are engaged on different levels of peace processes and political participation (regional, national and local). The project is being implemented in close partnership with UN Women.

 

 

A. Main Activities

  • Support the design, planning, facilitation, monitoring, implementation, and reporting of project activities along GIZ regulations and donor policies in a complex multi-stakeholder context;
  • Bring in expert knowledge on feminist and women-led civil spaces in all areas of control in Syria
  • Support the project in monitoring of activities and in developing further the M&E system
  • Support the project in aligning activities at the interface between the UN Women interventions and the results framework
  • Coordinating the interface between UN Women interventions in Syria and the GIZ Syria portfolio, pro-active communication of potential synergies
  • Suggest innovative and tailored ideas for the management of multi-track projects to the team based on a substantial and granular knowledge of dynamics of Syrian civil society
  • Ensuring good documentation of activities and learning experiences
  • Engaging in exchange of knowledge with team members in the three other focus countries and their implementing partners as well as with the supervisor
  • Liaise with international agencies, civil society actors, international organizations, and other actors relevant to the project in close coordination with supervisor
  • Ensure that the project’s work is in line with international good practice in dialogue, mediation, peace process support and peacebuilding;
  • Maintain of a good flow of communication and information between all involved institutions and counterparts and GIZ;
  • Ensure best practices of Do-no-harm and context-sensitivity;
  • Where appropriate and reasonable, the position holder is willing to perform tasks outside the scope of the job description.

 

 

B. Required qualifications, competencies and experience

 

Education/Qualifications

  • Post-graduate university degree (MA/ MSc, PhD) in Political Sciences, Peace and Conflict studies, International Relations and/or an area that is related to the project objective

 

Professional experience

  • At least 5 years’ professional experience in a comparable position;
  • At least 3 years professional experience in project management
  • Experience with international organisations and with cooperating with UN organisations
  • Experience in cooperating with and good understanding of the set-up of feminist/ women-led organizations in/ on Syria
  • Demonstrated experience of working on peacebuilding and dialogue projects in a politically sensitive and complex security as well as remote management set-up;
  • Deep understanding and analysis skills with regard to legal and political structures and processes of internationally coordinated/ UN-led peace processes;
  • Experience with data analysis, processing and reporting along a given results framework
  • Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Proven experience in applying best practices of Do-No-Harm and context-sensitivity;

 

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Ability to work as part of a team, to focus under pressure, and to work on tight timelines
  • Willingness to travel internationally
  • Fluency in Arabic and English (written and spoken)
